Out of the many aspects of becoming a good digital citizen digital security is arguably the most important. Digital security is connected to a person's well being and online safety. A huge part of digital security is protecting your personal and private information which means protecting your digital identity. The best way that you can protect yourself in the digital world is by being aware. There are many aspects to protecting yourself in the digital world just like there are in protecting yourself in the real world. For example, in the real world you might lock your front door before you leave your house. In the digital world you would logout of a social networking account before you leave a public computer. Another way that you can improve your digital security is by making sure you use strong passwords for your accounts. Here are some tips for creating strong passwords that are recommended by Microsoft. Create a password that is at least eight characters and includes a mix of upper and lowercase letters numbers and special characters ! and #. Avoid using the same password for financial sites that you use for everyday activity like email or social networking sites. And also do not use your username, real name, company name or date of birth as a password. Another way that you can keep your digital information secure is by installing security software. Security software such as firewall, antivirus, and anti-spyware protects your information that could be accessed by hackers. Lastly always avoid public Wi-Fi and PC's. Public Wi-Fi's and PC's are everywhere now. Wifi is offered at almost every Starbucks, fast food restaurant, and AirPort you go to. However using public Wi-Fi and PCs do come with a lot of risks. When you use public Wi-Fi here are a few tips to help you secure personal information. Use a firewall. If your operating system is Windows XP post SP2, Vista or Windows 7, it has a firewall built-in so always make sure to turn it on. Turn off your Wi-Fi when you're not using it and never log into a network that you do not know or recognize. Always make sure to encrypt sensitive files before you send them. If you have to use a credit card or enter passwords on a public Wi-Fi connection make sure that the website is using SSL. It will have a padlock icon on the browser's right-hand corner and it will also have a HTTPS:// in the address. Those are some tips for when you use public Wi-Fi now here are some tips for when you use a public computer. Never save your logon information. That means that when a website asks you if you want to save your password or remember me always say no. Always logout before leaving a website and don't type personal information on the computer. That means that you should avoid providing sensitive information to the computer such as credit card numbers, banking passwords, and other personal information that if exposed to hackers can provide a great risk. We hope that these tips can help you keep you and your private information safe!

Digital law

Many things can be learned from the iPad boot camp required by all students at Jesuit high school, however there are many things one should know that isn't taught on the boot camp. Digital Law on wikispaces.com "as the electronic responsibility for actions, deeds which is either ethical or unethical." Many confuse this with digital responsibility which is said to be the ethics of technology. Few examples of violations of digital law may include: hacking into other peoples personal details, creation and use of pirate software to download music and videos, and also creating viruses or Trojan horses. Another common violation that is becoming a big deal recently is identity theft. Studies show that 1 out of 5 families in the U.S have been victimized by identity theft. One common way criminals perform identity theft is through a process called "spoofing" or "IP spoofing". Hackers spoof people be convincing them too give up or provide their personnel or financial information that enables the hacker too commit credit card/ bank fraud or any other form of identity theft. Software piracy or "Pirate software" is also taken very seriously in today's world. This is common not only among criminals and hackers but also among students and even some adults all over the world. Software piracy occurs when an individual or even a company are in violation of a copyright infringement law which has normally been placed by the federal government. Countries where this occurs often include: Mexico, China, Indonesia, Russia, Brazil and Zimbabwe, all of which treat piracy differently. One of the most malicious forms of a violation of digital law would be the use of viruses, usually effected through Trojan horses. Trojan horses are used too typically cause lose or theft of data, and also system harm. These are especially dangerous because they are very hard to notice if an email or website is in fact a Trojan horse. Viruses work the same way but are different only because they are not hidden as much, and may be able to be activated without the authorization of the user.
Possible solutions to staying safe on the internet and making sure you don't violate digital laws are:

Know the laws and how severe the consequences are for violating digital law

Use common sense when sharing information over the internet

Make sure any downloads you make don't violate a copyright of copyright infringement law

Make sure to report any suspicious emails or pop up ads while on the internet test

Digital rights & Responsibilities

The way I see it, Digital Rights and Responsibilities is the most important element of the nine elements of digital citizenship. The reason why it's the most important element is because you must know how to use your iPad the right way and not abuse the privilege of having an iPad. Learning the rights that we have with our iPads also comes with responsibilities as well. Which means, knowing when it is the appropriate time to check your twitter account and how your castle is doing in Clash of Clans. This is why I think Digital Rights and Responsibilities is the most important element.

Digital Access

Digital access is a very special subject in the world of the internet. Those of us who are on it don't really understand how helpful it really is compared to those who do not have access. For me personally this subject is very close to my heart because this is what I do for living. I am a Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Cisco Certified Datacenter Professional, and I have a few more certifications but they are the same thing essentially. What all of this means is that I am allowed to work on massive networks, adding others to the world of the internet. Now what is really important is the bandwidth. That one word means so much in the eyes of a networking professional. This is the amount of data being used. To put this into understandable terms imagine a river, now the speed of the river is your latency/ping while the width of the river is your bandwidth, this means if its a 5ms ping with 5 mb/s bandwidth, you have a really fast small river that you cannot move big boats down (IE 4 hour HD movies) but you will have really fast speeds on the boats that can fit. Now one thing everyone must understand is that the internet is essentially a pronoun. The internet is just the general term while its made up of networks classified as Tier 1 (your largest, has to have at least 8 submarine cable and also have at minimum 20 network access points in 10 different countries in 3 continents), next is the Tier 2 (Be present in at least 5 countries and have 4 submarine cables), Tier 3 (Present in 5 countries), and ISP (Have at least 25 customers and must connect to backbone.) There are only 12 Tier one networks and you will never connect directly to them with your device, through your traffic will go through them, and the same goes for tier 2 and tier 3. Now what is special about these networks is they make up the backbone of the internet. All data runs through these massive networks to get where they need to go and it is incredible how fast they can achieve this even though they go through up to 10 hops (network transfers) per packet. This means when you went to this website you went through your local network, to your isp, then to a sub backbone to a nap, from there you continued to a tier 3 network, tier 2, tier 1, and then the same thing in reverse to get to the proper server. All of this occurs in 15 milli seconds. How does this tie in to digital access you may ask? Well I have been explaining how the internet works so you can understand the difficulty in providing access to a customer. You might also be thinking about how easy it probably is for the tier 1 networks and how much money they are making, think again. They have the most work out of us all! Sacramento alone can use around 250gb/s and when you think of all of the other cities, that's a lot of data. In order to handle the ever growing demand they must be constantly upgrading and watching all of these systems. Over winter break I had a friend who was at a data center for a little while and he ended assisting on a Savvis (Tier 1) router upgrade, In which as soon as they started all of California’s internet could be slowed down by at least 40ms, which is a lot. They had an hour to install a system with over 600 fiber optic cables that costed more than my life that had lasers shooting into them that if you looked down the center it would blind you instantly. These lasers were being fired from houston and ending in San Francisco to give you a good idea of how powerful these were. As they started reconnecting everything, every wire that was under a 4 in bend radius was immediately thrown out due to the possibility of shattering. This was a normal event though and is done once a month to increase bandwidth because of the demand. For those who are concerned about your household speeds of 25 mb/s down and 25mb/s up, I recommend checking your computer first before getting mad at anyone else because that is actually a fairly decent speed. Now I am going into the ISP section, the ones who give access to you. The costs involved for ISP’s are actually quite substantial, they have to pay the tier 3 networks, and pay the costs to have infrastructure all over the city. One of my ISP’s is Surewest and I am quite impressed with them because of their decision to run fiber optics to everyone through the PONET topology (Passive Optical Network.) This network consists of special machines at one central location shooting lasers into fibers at different light frequencies and then sending them through splitters and mergers till it reaches its final destination. Then your fiber modem sends back a response over the same fiber with cwdm. Installing this takes hundreds of permits, construction workers, and engineers to design properly. That is why it is taking so long to be added to new areas, mostly because of the government and it restrictions on how to install fiber. Unfortunately only temporary solutions can be offered with wireless (Which I abhor) and hopefully in the time to come the politicians will start to understand the difficulty involved and ease up instead.

Even though technology can be extremely helpful it can
also be physical dangerous to your eyes and brain. Just
make sure you moderate how much time you spend on it.

It is vitally important for us to learn and teach others how
to use technology so as to reach our maximum potential.

Digital etiquette

It is important because with out digital etiquette a message
could be misread and misunderstood.

Digital Communication

Is important because it provides a new and quicker way to
communicate with others.

Digital Commerce

Digital Commerce is defined as the electronic selling and buying
of goods. These days technology is having a tremendous influence in our
lives and studies have shown that 85% of people that use the Internet also
shop online. The Internet now gives us the opportunity to purchase a wide
variety of products such as toys, clothes, cars, food, and almost anything
else you can think of. The largest online retailer in the world is Amazon.
They deliver everything from A to Z as they show in their companies logo. Jeff
Bezos, the founder and CEO of Amazon, believed that he would be lucky if his
company ever got big enough to be able to afford a forklift. Now he is worth
over 25 billion dollars and his company is the largest and fastest online
retailer in the world. Amazon now is in the process of creating flying drones
to deliver goods of up to five pounds to customers. Here is an interview that 60
